JM COLLELL is a French contemporary artist specialising in wire mesh portraits. Born on 6 April 1968 and living in Montpellier, he has made a name for himself by exhibiting his work in various art galleries in France and abroad, as well as at numerous European and international exhibitions.
From an early age, Jm Collell tried his hand at various artistic techniques, including painting, drawing and sculpture. Self-taught and a lifelong art lover, it wasn't until 2017 that Jm Collell developed his own artistic work, working with wire mesh. His sensitivity to contemporary art has allowed him to draw inspiration from the greatest names, pushing his curiosity in search of new and unique art.
"Wire mesh could be seen as a work of art in itself ».
The artist works on every detail of her portraits, creating a stunning photo-realistic look. Many hours of work and a great deal of patience are needed to cut each sheet of mesh to shape the portraits. Thanks to his incredible sense of depth, Jm Collell is able to cut the layers of wire mesh by hand using a meticulous subtraction technique to create the portrait. As a result, his sculptures include areas of high-density mesh alongside the cut-out spaces, giving them a wonderful sense of light.
Artist JM Collell demonstrates exceptional technical mastery and meticulous attention to detail, seeking to create works that are almost photographic in appearance. Each cut of the wire mesh is meticulously calculated to recreate subtle variations in light and shadow, complex textures and delicate reflections. This extreme precision creates a deceptive illusion, transporting the viewer into another world, where the boundaries between reality and art become blurred.
His work is a tribute to meticulousness, patience and the constant quest for perfection. He goes beyond simply reproducing the appearance of a portrait. His aim is to capture the essence of the portrait, to convey emotion and provoke reflection in the viewer.
Between the real world and the imaginary world
Inspired by the current world around him, he has created numerous works based on cinema, fashion, animals, etc.
In recent years, he has focused on femininity, depicting women to demonstrate their beauty and strength.
Through his work on women, he demonstrates the link between the imaginary world and the real world. He works with emblematic figures such as the Geishas, renowned for their grace, sophistication and talent in the arts, and the independence, strength and courage of the Amazons in Greek mythology. It highlights all those women who have been a source of inspiration and fascination down the centuries.
These figures have the ability to defy gender norms and embody powerful feminine ideals. They have shown that women can be strong, autonomous and influential, and have played a key role in the emancipation and expression of femininity in their respective contexts.
